Mr. Federico Rampini

GEI Luncheon in honor of Mr. Federico Rampini, Chief Correspondent of La Repubblica – New York, September 10, 2009 – Remarks by Lucio Caputo – President of GEI.

 I am very pleased indeed to welcome to GEI Federico Rampini who has recently returned to the US as Chief Correspondent of La Repubblica.  

Federico was already guest of GEI in June of 2000, when he arrived in San Francisco, for a very interesting conversation on the Italian economic and political situation.

Since then he has traveled extensively, spending  the last five years in China, and today he is going to talk to us about this extraordinary experience.

In previous years (1979 to 1982) Rampini was the economic editor of the weekly magazine Rinascita and from 1982 to 1986, economic editor at the weekly magazines Mondo Economico and L’Espresso.

From 1986 to 1991 he was   correspondent from Paris for Il Sole-24 Ore and from 91 to 95 served as its Deputy Managing Editor. 

In 1995 he became Managing Editor of the Milan-edition of La Repubblica and from 1997 to 2000 was chief  European correspondent from Brussels.

From 2000 to 2004 he was West Coast correspondent and senior columnist of La Repubblica in San Francisco.  In 2004 he moved to Beijing where – in July 04 – he inaugurated the new China bureau of La Repubblica  and remained in the area as Asia Chief Correspondent till recently. 

Federico Rampini  was visiting professor at the University of California, at Berkeley and at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.

He is the author of essays on the European Welfare State, – on  European capitalism, – on the competition between Europe and the US, – on US/EU foreign policies, on the American economy and society after 9/11, on the US presidential elections, and on China and India.  He is also a Member of the Scientific Boards of several foreign affairs reviews such as “Critique Internationale”.
