GEI Luncheon in honor of Giulio Maria Terzi Sant’Agata

I am very pleased to welcome back to NY and to GEI  the new Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN, Amb. Giulio Maria Terzi di Sant’Agata.

Before returning to New York  Amb. Terzi  had a distinguished career with important positions both in Italy and abroad.

Amb. Terzi was born in Bergamo.  He completed his studies in Milan where, in 1970, obtained a law degree at the University of Milan.

In 1973, after completing his military service, he started his diplomatic career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome.

In his long and  very successful career he served at the Italian Embassy in Paris, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome, as Assistant to the General Secretary, at  the Italian Embassy in Ottawa and, as Consul General, at the Italian Consulate in Vancouver.

He returned to Rome in 1987 as Assistant to the General Director of Economic Affairs and in 1990 was sent to Brussels to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the North Atlantic Council.

From October 1993  to July 1998 he was in New York at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN with Amb. Fulci at the time of the great and successful battle to maintain Italy’s status at the UN.

Back in Rome he was first Head of the Office of the General Secretary and then Head of the Co-ordination Department of the General Secretariat.

On March 2002 he was appointed Ambassador of Italy to Israel.

He returned to Rome in  2004 as Deputy General Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and then was General Director of Multilateral Political Affairs  and Humanitarian Rights.

In February 2007 he was promoted to the rank of Ambassador and in June 2008  appointed Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN.

Since arriving in New York,  he has been very active meeting with authorities and the representatives of the most important nations  at the U.N.  establishing important relations in view of the General Assembly.

On a more personal note I would like to add that I have known Giulio  for many years and always admired his incredible  energy, his great efficiency and professionalism, his capacity to go straight to the point of any problem, the extraordinary fast pace of all his actions, as well as his intelligence and his thirst for perfection.

He has brought all this experience and all these qualities to his new appointment as Italian Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

GEI is  therefore very pleased to welcome and honor Amb. Giulio Terzi  and to present him with the “GEI FRIENDSHIP AWARD” in recognition of his many accomplishments.
