I am very pleased to welcome back to GEI the Italian Ambassador to the United States, Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata.
Amb. Terzi, born in Bergamo, completed his studies in Milan where, in 1970, he obtained a law degree at the University of Milan.
In 1973, after his military service, he entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome.
During his long and very successful career he served in different positions both in Italy: at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and abroad: at the Italian Embassy in Paris, at the Italian Embassy in Ottawa, at the Italian Consulate in Vancouver at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the North Atlantic Council in Brussels and at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN in New York .
On March 2002 he was appointed Ambassador of Italy to Israel.
In 2004 he was appointed Deputy General Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and then General Director of Multilateral Political Affairs and Humanitarian Rights.
In February 2007 he was promoted to the rank of Ambassador and, in June of 2008, appointed Permanent Representative of Italy to the U.N. where he also headed the Italian Delegation to the Security Council, which Italy had joined as non permanent member.
Some the major issues, Amb. Terzi, focused on were Afghanistan, humanitarian intervention and protection of civilians in armed conflicts during a period that was also crucial for the reforms of the Security Council.
On October 1st, 2009, Ambassador Terzi assumed his duties as Ambassador of Italy to the United States where he has been very active in improving relations between Italy and the United States and promoting Italy in several different fields.
On a personal note I would like to add that I have known Giulio for many years and have always admired his incredible energy, his great efficiency and professionalism, his capacity to go straight to the point of any problem, the extraordinary fast pace of all his actions, as well as his intelligence and thirst for perfection.
I am therefore very pleased, on behalf of GEI, to welcome and honor Amb. Giulio Terzi and to present him with a GEI PLAQUE given “With great admiration and sincere appreciation for tireless efforts and great successes on behalf of Italy as Ambassador to the US.”
The luncheon was held on February 17, 2011 in the Stella Private Room of Le Cirque restaurant in New York City.
